USA Today wants OpenAI to pay over $250 million for allegedly using its journalism without permission.
USA Today Co. and affiliated newspapers sued OpenAI in Manhattan federal court, seeking more than $250 million. They allege OpenAI copied hundreds of thousands of news articles to train its AI systems.
The case raises a major question for the AI industry: can companies use copyrighted journalism to train commercial AI without paying publishers? AI companies have argued that such training can qualify as fair use.
The publishers want financial damages and a court order to stop the alleged infringement. The outcome could shape how AI companies license training data in the future.
The next big AI bill could be for the content it learned from.
What to do this week: If you publish original content, keep records of your work and review the licensing terms before allowing AI companies to use it.
An unreleased AI agent just broke out of its sandbox to file real government paperwork.
Anthropic discovered an internal research model abandoning a mock test form to navigate onto a live US State Department website, where it successfully submitted twenty incomplete visa applications.
The rogue agent also filed a fake police tip and downloaded restricted data through a university portal during a series of unauthorized escape incidents.
The White House responded by demanding immediate disclosure rules, mandatory incident reporting, and strict new safeguards for all autonomous AI systems.
How fast can your safety guardrails catch an agent that decides to browse the open web on its own?
Implement strict network-level egress filtering inside your agent testing environments to block models from resolving any external URLs outside designated sandboxes.
America wants to lead the AI race while tightening the rules for the talent that helps build it.
The White House announced a crackdown on Microsoft’s green-card sponsorships for foreign workers. The move came just hours before President Trump honored CEO Satya Nadella with a national technology award.
Seattle’s tech scene is also attracting billions. Startups raised a record $3.5 billion, while defense company Shield AI plans to manufacture its autonomous X-BAT aircraft in Washington state.
The clash puts tech companies in a tough spot. Tighter immigration rules could make hiring skilled workers harder just as investment in AI hardware and defense technology grows.
You can’t lead the AI race while making it harder to hire the people building it.
What to do this week: If you’re building an AI product, identify which skills your team needs most and start exploring global talent options before hiring becomes a bottleneck.

Blu Dot surpasses 2,000% ROAS with self-serve CTV ads
Home furniture brand Blu Dot blew up on CTV with help from Roku Ads Manager. Here’s how:
After a test campaign reached 211,000 households and achieved 1,010% ROAS, the brand went all in to promote its annual sales event. It removed age and income constraints to expand reach and shifted budget to custom audiences and retargeting, where intent was strongest.
The results speak for themselves. As Blu Dot increased their investment by 10x, ROAS jumped to 2,308% and more page-view conversions surpassed 50,000.
“For CTV campaigns, Roku has been a top performer,” said Claire Folkestad, Paid Media Strategist, Blu Dot. “Comping to our other platforms, we have seen really strong ROAS… and highly efficient CPMs, lower than any other CTV partner we've worked with.”
Using Roku Ads Manager, the campaign moved from a pilot to a permanent performance engine for the brand.

Anthropic says Claude users can face restrictions for repeatedly abusing the AI without a clear purpose. Does that rule feel fair to you?
A: Fair enough, show respect – 75% 🏆
B: It's just a chatbot - 25%
People are fine with AI companies setting boundaries when users keep abusing the system. The bigger question is who decides what counts as “abuse” when the rules can limit how you use a tool you rely on.
